If 20v definitely needs 6-speed to keep revs up in high-RPM powerband. If 16v, 5-spd should be OK. For street car, mid-range torque is more important, so go with 16v. You'll want to bump up compression to 10.5-11.0:1 with forged piston. GE head on 7A block will drop compression on already low 9.5:1 factory setting.
